The toppling of the totalitarian regimes has brought a wide range of changes in Eastern Europe* in all spheres of life. The countries from this part of Europe have been gradually or radically opening their centrally planned economies to the dynamic forces of the market. However, the new governments' attempts to adopt the new economic system through the privatization of publicly owned industries and structural readjustment coincided with a period of deep recession inherited from previous regimes. These countries not only have had to contend with a decline in national economic output, but are also facing rising levels of unemployment and sometimes an extremely high ratio of inflation. Obviously, this changing political and economic context has challenged the educational systems in these countries, particularly the higher education systems
