We appreciate the careful attention that Professor Toshkov has devoted to our research, and we are grateful for the opportunity to respond. Given the space constraints, we must be very brief. We focus on his criticisms of assumptions. 1 Professor Toshkov argues that our findings and conclusions are based on three assumptions that he claims are unwarranted: (i) the decision to take the natural logarithm of the homicide rate; (ii) the use of a 1-year time lag for the European Union (EU) dummy variable; and (iii) the implementation of fixed effects for time. With respect to taking the log of the homicide rate, the point of departure for our study was the research on the impact of EU accession on violent crime in Lithuania by Andresen. He applied the log transformation in his analyses, and we accordingly followed suit. We agree that there is no obvious theoretical rationale for preferring logarithms over the original metric, nor is there such a rationale for preferring the original metric over logarithms. We note that the use of log transformations is quite common in the cross-national homicide literature. Nevertheless, the discrepant results pose a puzzle that warrants further consideration.
