Christopher Saxton, in addition to producing his famous national Atlas of England and Wales in 1579 and his large general map of the country in 1583, was also a surveyor of estates. These surveys have been systematically discovered during the twentieth century, and show that most of Saxton's estate work was effected in Yorkshire, particularly in the West Riding. Only one estate survey relating to southern England was known in the list which had been drawn up by 1966, i.e. that of Bayford and Goodmansterne (1590). Late in 1971, however, a further estate map by Saxton came to light at an exhibition held in Maidstone. This relates to Faversham in Kent. It is dated 1590 and might therefore be the earliest known plan executed by Saxton. It bears comparison with the plan of Bayford and Goodmansterne and indicates more activity in southern England than has previously been attributed to Saxton
