Historians in the United States, Europe, and Latin America embarked on transnational analyses connecting the irrepressible conflict to different international scenarios. This process of internationalization released American Civil War studies from the frame of a single nation's history and opened possibilities for connection with simultaneous phenomena taking place in different corners of the Atlantic. This collection of essays presents a significant sample of those efforts. The book encompasses the ways that the American Civil War affected a world in reconfiguration and explores critically how Union and Confederate authorities reacted to diplomatic and military engagements abroad.
