Analysis of demographic data from three economically successful Bombay communities with high levels of educational attainment shows that the assumptions underlying the demographic transition theory, related economic theories of demographic change, and family planning programs need to be reassessed. The Parsis, Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmins, and the Jains have all successfully adapted to life in urban India in the last two centuries. Their strategies of adaptation have been defined by the cultural perceptions and definitions that they brought with them to the city, and each has developed a different ethos concerning their occupational pursuits, family and marriage structures and their demographic patterns.
