This article describes a swamp rice development scheme initiated in Mando Chiefdom, Sierra Leone, in 1965. Mando Chiefdom traditionally is an upland rice area, and the swamp rice program met only slight acceptance during its first two years; by the end of 1967, however, participation in the program had increased greatly. Several reasons for this increasing acceptance of the program are discussed.
