Sequential G- and C-banding was used to investigate the nature of intra-specific variation in the C-bands of the common chimpanzee. Twenty-five chimpanzees constituted the final sample. While no significant variation in the centromeric C-bands was detected, several prominent variations in the telomeric C-bands were noted. The most striking variants were of chromosome arms 8p, 9p, 10p, 19p, and the five satellited chromosomes, noted as obvious consistent disparities in the amount of heterochromatin between homologs. Most variants were found in one or two individuals; but the variant chromosome 19 was found in nine individuals. Additionally, two of the chimpanzees appeared to be heterozygous for a heterochromatic feature considered to be a cytotaxonomic marker of the pygmy chimpanzee
