This article offers an account of the ancient Chinese system of judicial astrology known as field-allocation (fenye) astrology. This form of prognostication, premised on archaic cosmological conceptions about the correspondence between the celestial and terrestrial realms, is best known in the highly systematized and regular form preserved in sources of the Warring States and Han periods. This mature form was achieved after a long process of evolution and systematization. This study will provide a brief account of this process and then illustrate how the principles and astronomical observations involved came to be applied in two epochal military and political contexts-the battle of Muye (1046 B.C.) and the battle of Chengpu (632 B.C.). Field-allocation astrology may have played a significant role in decision-making in the early Zhou
