In an interview about curriculum development and Indigenous history education, the Māori historian Aroha Harris contends that we pass over the twentieth century quickly so that our history brings us to diversity and harmony in the present. Yet, significantly, a history education, she argues, teaches critical thinking, how to analyze different points of view, and how to weigh different sources. Reproduction on the Reservation is a fine example of Harris's wish for rigorous modern Indigenous history. Reproduction on the Reservation is a dense, balanced study of “the intersecting histories of colonialism and biological reproduction” that forefronts “native women's creativity, determination and advocacy in the reproductive realm” (pp. 3, 173). It is based in part on a sweeping study of the colonial archive; Brianna Theobald “never knew where biological reproduction would pop up in the historical record or what would emerge as important context” (p. 14).
