After the appearance of numerous popular articles on Christian Reconstruction that substituted apocalyptic warnings for objective analysis, Michael McVicar has at last given students and scholars a balanced, academic study of the movement. In a remarkably even-handed analysis of the movement's founder and his theological ideas, McVicar traces changes in R. J. Rushdoony's thinking over time and explores the wide-ranging influence of his unusual views of politics and religion. He sheds new light on one theological influence on the Christian Right through a study of the man who convinced conservative evangelicals that they could acquire “dominion” in the nation. McVicar's book is based on an unprecedented range of archival material, including Rushdoony's private correspondence and diaries, which no other historian has examined. McVicar demonstrates a highly sophisticated understanding of Rushdoony's theological ideas and their larger religious context, and as a result, his intellectual biography of Rushdoony is unequaled in its depth and in the scope of its analysis of the influence of Christian Reconstructionist thought on modern evangelicalism and the Christian Right.
