Over the course of her long and prolific career, Sabrina P. Ramet has distinguished herself as a respected authority on the political history of modern Eastern Europe and the role that religion has played therein. In recent years she has trained her attention on Poland, and the volume under review is a welcome distillation of her research. After an introduction designed to orient the reader, Ramet’s second chapter attempts to condense the history of Catholicism in Poland from 966 to 1772 in just nineteen pages. The disappointing result is riddled with critical omissions and generalizations that obscure more complicated realities. Whole centuries are summed up in mere paragraphs, and critical figures and phenomena (Iwo Odrowąż, Zbigniew Oleśnicki, Piotr Skarga, Stanisłl/aw Konarski, the mendicant orders, the conciliar movement, etc.) are essentially ignored. It also suffers from an overreliance on decades-old sources. Instead of making a cursory effort to cover this vast time period, Ramet would have been well advised to organize her book around its primary strength and actual focus: a study of the Catholic Church in modern Polish history, from 1772 to the present.
