Reponse to Stewart Lone Josha Hotaka Roth I meant my review to engage Lone on a number of arguments he makes in his book and by no means intended it as a personal attack. As I wrote in my review, Lone's book is a contribution to the study of Japanese immigrants to Brazil. I regret if my review created the impression Lone had not consulted any of Maeyama Takashi's works besides the two published in English, and I would like to take this opportunity to clear up this point of contention. Lone does indeed cite other articles by Maeyama in the endnotes, but he overlooks Maeyama's major work on that period (Imin no Nihon kaiki undō[Return to Japan movement] [Tokyo: Nihon Hōsō Shuppan Kyōkai, 1982]) and does not acknowledge the areas in which Maeyama's arguments correspond to his own.
