Walter Burle Marx was one of the most accomplished musicians that Brazil has produced, but in recent times his role in classical Brazilian music has been largely unacknowledged. "Outside of Villa-Lobos, he [was] the greatest and most pure dynamic musical energy . . . in our musical panorama" (). Marx was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on July 23, 1902, and died in Akron, Ohio, on December 28, 1990, still a Brazilian citizen in his adopted country. His musical involvements included performing as a pianist, conducting many of the world's great orchestras, founding Brazil's best orchestra, promoting interchange of music across the Americas, and composing a rich variety of four symphonies, many choral works, chamber music, pieces for solo guitar, and numerous other works. Although he gained much adulation and attention during his piano concertizing, conducting, and promoting phases, he was less recognized as a composer. This biography explores these phases of Walter Burle Marx's life and his contributions to the musical scene in Brazil and the United States
