On the basis of legislative role theory, the study develops a set of role orientations of relevance to West European politics and the European Community. Roles are operationalised in the core and clientele sectors, using techniques that take account of recent research in social psychology. Using multiple-regression analysis, the hierarchy and relationships of national, party, and European Community factors are evaluated as predictors of role structures. Finally, the roles are related to members' legislative behaviour in both committee and plenary sessions, showing the value of role concepts in research on European legislative behaviour
