verse from Asturias in northern Spain are examined in the interest of understanding the qualitative movements they accomplish in the various subjects of the verse. A theory of social shape shifting in cultural animates the discussions. We shall argue that such shiftings or movements along the semantic dimensions of are accomplished by metaphoric and metonymic predictions on the subjects of the verse. And we shall chart the quality space that is referenced in this collection of poetry: the culture within which this movement takes place. Any simple notion of movement is challenged, however, by an evocativeness, indeed a multivocality, in certain of these poetic images. This evocativeness summons some villagers beyond mere movement. It calls them out of themselves and their social situation, as it were, to larger perspectives. This paper has benefited from and thus is in particular dialogue with the work of two colleagues.
