The second is the question of how historical and critical approaches to works of literature, philosophy, and the arts are related; and that topic, strangely enough, makes its appearance in only one of these essays. I shall therefore be extremely brief in my comments on it. In restricting myself in this way, I shall be neglecting much that is of interest and importance in those essays that I shall be discussing, and two of the essays will not come under consideration at all. Since, however, all eight essays are before the reader, and since the history and practice of criticism are not areas in which I have special competence, I may perhaps be forgiven for not ranging more widely among the issues which these articles raise
