The Scienza della legislacione of the Neapolitan legal expert Gateano Filangieri enjoyed a considerable circulation in Spain during the final decades of the Eighteenth century. It was the main subject of numerous translations, reviews and discourses. It exerced enormous influence on the Spanish Enlightenment of the late generation. The main piece of this process of dissemination was the Spanish translation of the Scienza. It was undertaken in 1787-1789 by J. Rubio, a Valencian lawyer. Nevertheless, the Filangieri ́s ideas on Political and Economis did not always received a warm exposure: the reception given the Scienza in Spain was full of censorships and refutations. This article analyses the critical reception of the work amongst the Spanish members of the Enlightenment. Its content is further evidence of the existence of an active anti-Enlightenment and reactionary movement in Eighteenth-century European and Spanish that has so far received scant attention from researches
