The global economic and financial crisis has left its mark on Europe. There are many voices in politics and academia claiming that bold steps in advancing European integration are often taken in times of crisis. There is no doubt that the pace and intensity of institutional engineering currently visible within the European Union (EU) has reached unprecedented levels. At the centre of all this activity is the issue of euro area governance. Ironically, the intensification of the debate following the first wave of EU crisis responses in the fall 2008 coincided with the 10th anniversary of the euro. By now everyone has realised that euro area governance is as much a question about resolving difficulties inside the euro area as it is a question about the future shape of the EU as a whole. It is also not without irony that the question of Britain's role in all this appears, on the one hand, to be extremely important though, on the other hand, British influence over concrete institutional choices, which are currently made, is almost impossible to detect—apart from the fact that these decisions are made more difficult
