Propertius uses the language of fidelity to destabilize gendered roles in love poetry and mainstream Roman society. His rejection of conventional gender roles and their elegiac reversals contributes to the construction of a disidentifying subject, which draws upon both hegemonic and counter-cultural constructions of masculine selfhood while simultaneously rejecting them
