In East and Central Europe transition from a socialist to a market-oriented form of economic organizations risks directly or indirectly the essential needs of children. This book explores how these dangers can be avoided by protecting vital human needs and by incorporating concern for basic human needs into the economic policies and social welfare infrastructure of the countries. This book is organized into 2 parts and 8 chapters. Part 1 presents a series of contributions concerning the region as a whole. Chapter 1 reviews the evidence about children prior to the reform. It also deals with a preliminary review of available information on changes in child conditions after the reform was introduced. Chapter 2 reviews three different models of social policy in three market economies--the US Germany and Sweden. In chapter 3 a discussion of existing trends in social policy prior to and since the economic reform is presented. Chapter 4 analyzes the components of the economic reforms underway the problems of implementation and the consequences for child and human welfare. In the second part 4 case studies are presented: 2 from Hungary and Poland (“early reformers”) contrasted with 2 from Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia
