What is it like being an LGBTQ+ parent? In June 2017, the American Psychoanalytic Association Committee on Gender and Sexuality sponsored a discussion group in the format of a round table that primarily included LGBTQ+ psychoanalysts speaking on the joys and challenges of parenting in a heteronormative world. (The + is used metaphorically to capture all the identities that fall outside traditional gender norms.) The goal of the discussion group was to describe the impact of all types of family relationships on child development and demonstrate how to foster a social environment in which all children and their families are valued, experience support and recognition, and in which discrimination and prejudice have no place. We are pleased to finally publish this updated paper, which is dedicated to the memory of Don Spivak, whose commitment to the welfare of children is dearly missed
