In a cross-cultural study, sport activity, sport motivation, health status, healthrelated behaviour and body concepts of German (West), Czech and Russian adults are compared. The samples, including about 400 persons in each country, were analysed by using a questionnaire. Results clearly show that three different somatic cultures can be distinguished. According to the theory of Inglehart, from Russia to Germany there is an increase in internal or self-orientation, which is expressed by differences in behaviour, motives and body concepts. The Czech position generally is between both, closer to the German one, but with some specific variations. Compared with the Germans and Czechs, Russians reveal a problematic pattern of low physical activity, low health orientation and a pronounced external locus of control belief which is connected with the low quality of the health system
