The dominant Euro-centric image of the history of two totally different worlds, adversaries for over half a millennium, produces a demonized image of Turkey. In response, Turkish literature tones down, when not completely glossing over, all the points of friction, projecting an idealized and totally Europeanized image of Turkey. While in the collective European consciousness, the dichotomy between the Cross and the Crescent remains indelible, mainstream Turcological literature continues relentlessly stressing only the course of secularization in Turkey and the steady separation of polity and religion. This article proposes a contrapuntal re-reading of Euro-Turkish relations within the fields of historiography, cultural studies (including religion) and politico-social sciences. This involves the identification and decodification of the points of convergence and divergence between Turkey and Europe, i.e. a process of decoding the relationship between the two sides, in all of its contradictions and not in its polarized forms of either harmonious cultural identity or ‘clash of civilizations
