This article examines the main sources of unemployment in Algeria. It attributes the increase in the country's unemployment rate to a sharp decline in domestic consumption following the 1986 world oil price collapse, and the industrial restructuring policy put into effect in 1994. The article also shows that the official statistics may not reflect the true situation in Algeria and proposes speeding up the process of economic integration with Europe as a way to solve this social problem in the medium to long term
