In the forty-five years since Cecil Gould's Trophy of Conquest. The Musée Napoleon and the Creation of the Louvre our knowledge of the Napoleonic despoliations of European collections has advanced in leaps and bounds, largely thanks to the work of Édouard Pommier, Paul Wescher and most recently Bénédicte Savoy. Napoleon's Legacy consists of twelve essays (all of them in English) that build on their work and in several cases present new research: studies of particular collections and of particular displays within the Napoleonic Louvre as well as explorations of the legal status of ‘loot’ in the period (by Robert W. Scheller) and timely reflections (from Andrew McClellan) on how the case against restitution made by Louvre director Dominique Vivant Denon anticipates the case for ‘universal museums’ being made so forcefully today by James Cuno and others.
