This work is dedicated to the scrutiny of the Asian and European fabric trade used as currency object for the purchase of West Central Africans who were trafficked to Bahia during the first half of the eighteenth century.The accurate analysis of the documentation showed that this trade developed through transnational networks.Its main agents obeyed their own market rules.Customs laws and the high taxation imposed by the metropolis on imported fabrics that served human trafficking made the legally trafficked fabrics uncompetitive in the West Central African market, also disputed by other European nations.Because of this, smuggling has become systematic in the fabric business, both in Bahia and in Angola.Illegal trade, far from undermining the colonial system, was, in reverse, the key to its survival.In other words, the fraud in the Portuguese tax system allowed the slave traffickers to acquire manufactured goods at competitive prices and, thus, they were able to compete with the nations of the North (England, France and the Netherlands
