Europe has frequently been irritated by the realities of its own postcoloniality, while postcolonial studies remains similarly irked by the emergence of Europe as part of the postcolonial world. This chapter explores some of the historical, geographical, cultural and political trajectories of Europe's colonial past and postcolonial present; scrutinizes culture, literature and other arts in postcolonial Europe; and highlights the structural invisibility of Europe in postcolonial discourse. The chapter's final section asks how Europe might move beyond the 'postcolonial melancholia' diagnosed by Paul Gilroy, and calls for an urgently needed dialogue between Europeanization and postcolonial studies
