Since the turn of the twentieth century Germany has been an immigration country. The immigrants set up sports clubs at an early period. They were created within the framework of ethnicization and community formation and played a social and political role in the ethnic colonies. The article deals with the historic migration of the Poles before the First World War and their sports clubs, and contrasts this survey with the immigration of Turks to Germany after 1961 and the establishment of Turkish clubs in German football leagues. It comes to the conclusion that there are similar processes at work in the course of both migration movements, and the clubs play similar roles. That said, a central difference can be found in the homogeneity of the Polish subculture before 1914 and in the differentiated structure of the Turkish milieu in modern Germany
