Egyptian aspirations to exercise control over Asiatic soil have a shrouded beginning. The expansion towards the East, concentrating on the conquest and the incorporation of the area East of the Damietta-branch of the Nile,1 was a primary concern of the Egyptian kings of the Old Kingdom.
