Becoming Creole: Nature and Race in BelizeThere are two things that set Becoming Creole apart from previous scholarship on such complex human-environment Authors often appear to assume that their readers either require or desire an in-depth understanding of the philosophy that most often informs and underscores this scholarship.More-thanhuman scholarship can sometimes feel more like empirically informed philosophical treatises rather than philosophically informed empirical work.This practice can be offputting for readers for whom philosophers such as Deleuze and Guattari or Whitehead are of no particular interest or who do not necessarily care to read long genealogies of human-environment research.Although these theoretical connections are neither missing from nor underdeveloped in Becoming Creole, they are translated and parsed in such a way that casual readers will not lose interest and where those who are interested in the more philosophical aspects will better understand Johnson's use of these complex ideas.The theoretical sections of the book are thus imminently approachable and are developed through the various vignettes, anecdotes, and ethnographic details spread throughout the text.The result is not only that readers are left with a better understanding of the ways in which Johnson uses complex bodies of theory to ground her work, but also how and why this theory feeling of abstractness that often comes with writing on assemblage, entanglement, and becoming.The second difference is much more material.Rather space and time, Johnson draws on two decades of work in and with the communities of Lemonal and Crooked Tree, Belize, and their global diasporas.People who are children in one part of the story are adults later on and
