This article treats John Ruskin’s lectures on The Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century as an experimental foray in cultural climatology, suggesting that Ruskin’s efforts to document, and develop conceptual rubrics for, an unprecedented meteorological phenomenon offer important insights for the task of the humanities in a time of climate change.
