Das institutionalistische Paradigma der Wissenschaftssoziologie ist seit den siebziger Jahren zunehmend durch ein wissenssoziologisches Paradigma abgelöst worden, das diesen Vorgang als Theoriefortschritt darstellt. Es handelt sich aber um zwei komplementäre wissenschaftssoziologische Herangehensweisen, da sowohl ihre Erklärungsziele als auch ihre Erklärungsfaktoren unterschiedlich sind. Die Wiederbelebung des institutionalistischen Paradigmas ist wichtig, weil es sich besonders gut für die immer bedeutsamere Analyse forschungspolitischen Steuerungshandelns eignet. Dabei kann dieses Paradigma davon profitieren, daß es mittlerweile vielfältige Konzepte und Modelle über Zusammenhänge zwischen Akteurkonstellationen und institutioneilen Dynamiken gibt
