Ethnische Mobilisierung und die Logik von Identitätskämpfen
Eine situationstheoretische Perspektive jenseits von „Rational Choice“

Ethnische Differenzierung ist ein Phänomen, das neue Anforderungen an soziologische Theoriebildung stellt. Daß ethnische Differenzierung in modernen Gesellschaften zu einer zunehmend bedeutsamen Konfliktlinie und statusbestimmenden Variable geworden ist, hat aber über die Korrektur modernisierungstheoretischer Annahmen hinausführende Konsequenzen. Zur Disposition steht der Umgang mit askriptiven Merkmalen, ihrer identitätsbildenden Funktion und die Funktionsweise damit verbundener symbolischer Formen. Der Beitrag diskutiert einen in der jüngeren Diskussion zentralen theoretischen Zugang zum Problem ethnischer Differenzierung, nämlich die Theorie rationaler Wahl, unter dem Gesichtspunkt ihres Leistungspotentials für dieses Problem. Gerade die für den theoretischen Erfolg dieser Theorie konstitutiven systematischen Beschränkungen werden als Schlüssel zu einem für diesen Gegenstand adäquateren theoretischen Blick benutzt. Die Bedeutung der symbolischen Dimension, das Phänomen symbolischer Bewertung und Entwertung von Statuspositionen und Kapitalienbesitz und das daraus resultierende Phänomen symbolischer Macht werden in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit Theorien rationaler Wahl entfaltet und schließlich in einem „situationstheoretischen“ Ansatz analytisch gefaßt
