The study of popular disturbances can enable the social historian to obtain rudimentary insights into the opaque society of working people during the nineteenth century, and this article seeks to examine the relationship between popular disturbances and the Irish presence in mid‐Victorian Wolverhampton within the broader historical perspectives on Irish immigration, the police and the character of Victorian society. Specific reference will be made to the growth and development of the Irish community in Wolverhampton, followed by an analysis of the nature and significance of the Irish contribution to popular disturbances in the town between 1848 and 1874
