As part of the conversation on “Cosmopolitics and the Radical Pastoral,” a blog associated with a panel on “the radical pastoral” at the 2011 ASLE conference (radicalpastoral.blogspot.com), Jennifer Ladino suggests that we deploy nostalgia as part of our discussions of the analytical potential for a radical pastoral. In Reclaiming Nostalgia: Longing for Nature in American Literature, Ladino thoroughly expands that suggestion and makes the compelling argument that nostalgia can be “a vehicle through which critique happens,” an idea that she has termed “counter-nostalgia” (15). Drawing on the long history of nostalgia, Ladino's carefully researched monograph addresses the idea “that nostalgia often transcends its stigmatized role, and in surprising ways” (xiii), including as a “mechanism for social change, a model for ethical relationships, and a motivating force for social and environmental justice” (8). She acknowledges its complicated history and addresses the overall critiques of and concerns about nostalgia, including its use by political conservatives for environmentally destructive ends and the trope of the Ecological Indian, but she concludes that nostalgia needs to be revisited for its critical potential rather than abandoned in the wake of its use by reactionaries and its dismissal by earlier ecocritics
