Depuis l'epoque de la Reforme, la religion est devenue une caracteristique du conflit ethnique et colonial en Irlande. La naissance d'un Etat irlandais libre a facilite la fusion entre la catholicisme et le nationalisme. Ainsi, une ideologie dominante a commence d'operer; elle est composee de deux elements: une version locale de la preoccupation de Rome pour le modernisme et le socialisme et une identification de l'Irlande avec le catholicisme en termes de comportement quotidien. L'Eglise catholique est devenue un arbitre en matiere de morale et elle assume le role d'une police ethique avec l'accord du nouvel Etat
