Freud offers a massive affirmation of the following well-known thesis: if woman is enigmatic, it is because she has reasons-good ones-for hiding herself, for hiding the fact that she has nothing to hide, for concealing that pus-filled cavity which threatens to contaminate and infect man. In seeking to veil herself, the woman would only be imitating nature, which has always already covered over her genitals [son sexe] with pubic hair, and which bestows upon her, from time to time, a supplement of beauty for the purpose of sparing man the horror provoked by the unmitigated sight of her genital organs. Her beauty, her charms would be a late and all the more precious compensation for her natural sexual inferiority. The reasons women would have for veiling themselves and for wanting to be enigmatic would all link up with man's need for a certain fetishism, in which woman, her interests being at stake, would become an accomplice
