The introduction of a novel technology and its impact on an established practice are well-studied topics. However, few have ventured to refer to this process as ‘innovation’ as the latter is often uncritically mistaken for invention. The difficulty to perceive it as innovation in a context of shifting practices is perhaps evoked by the specific domain of that. Indeed, there is a tendency to discern the ‘Silicon Valley’ model and its by-products as the common form of innovation. By contrast, innovation in Lanzara’s book is a process happening in the distinct domains of music education and the court system. For him studying innovation as phenomenon means revealing the temporal disruptions and discontinuities it triggers in routine practice. Yet, Lanzara argues that innovation also demands reinstatement of balance by way of improvisation. Innovation as he notes has a reconstructive effect: ‘it reorganizes a domain of practice and our social world according to new principles, blending, and reassembling preexisting and new elements into novel arrangements’ (p. 15
