Indonesia’s cultural diversity presents both social potential and challenges for integration, particularly in multiethnic and multireligious settings. This study examines the Memarek tradition in North Lombok as a culturally embedded medium of intercultural communication that facilitates identity negotiation and social integration. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis involving community members from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. The findings reveal that Memarek functions as a communicative arena where cultural identities are dynamically negotiated through ritual practices, shared symbols, and collective norms. Participation in the tradition encourages a transformation from ethnocentric orientations toward ethnorelativism, fostering mutual recognition without erasing cultural differences. Drawing on Identity Negotiation Theory, the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity, and the Integrative Theory of Cross-Cultural Adaptation, this study demonstrates that ritual-based communication plays a crucial role in sustaining social harmony. The research contributes to intercultural communication scholarship by highlighting local cultural traditions as vital resources for integration in plural societies.
