The development of green competencies contributes to the prevention and mitigation of negative impacts on the environment, favouring the sustainability of organisations in the tourism sector. This paper aims to present the validation of a scale regarding green competencies and their implementation in organisations in the tourism sector. 39 hotels and 106 restaurant businesses in Tabasco, Mexico agreed to part‐take in the study. The confirmatory factor analysis showed a proper global fit to the data of the proposed multidimensional model with the factors of Ecological Knowledge, Ecological Skills and Green Attitudes. Areas of opportunity were identified in the study sample, where the lowest level of competencies corresponded to ecological skills. To conclude, the Green Competencies Scale can support actors in the tourism sector to better understand the elements that make up green competencies and to evaluate them to intervene in environmental conservation
