ON A WARM April evening in 2008, I placed a call to Kuala Lumpur. It was the beginning of the Malaysian business day, but I had not called to speak with an economist or financial titan. I had called an imam. Feisal Abdul Rauf was not just any imam; he was one who made annual pilgrimages to the World Economic Forum in Davos and who had recently pledged to help protect global economies from the shocks induced by terrorist attacks.1 Since learning in 2004 of his ideas about the confluence of Islamic ethics and American economics, I had endeavored to understand how Abdul Rauf had become such a believer in the righteousness of a minimally regulated market—including in its neoliberal form, in which public services are privatized and provided by corporations. In addition to discerning how he had come to connect piety with deregulation and freedom for the market, I wanted to understand the kind of freedom this model of liberation afforded individuals, and its religious, racialized, and gendered limits.
