A RELUCTANCE TO READ the final form of the Deborah and Barak story is one of the curiosities of recent criticism. To treat chapters 4 (prose) and 5 (poem) as discrete entities has long been a given of historical criticism. Moreover, despite the widespread acceptance of final form readings it seems that still few biblical critics want to read the prose and poem as parts of a whole.' Even so literary-critical a critic as Mieke Bal goes to some trouble to avoid doing any such thing (Bal 1988).2 Without mentioning the acute critical problems involved in dating this material,3 she deems the poem to be contemporaneous with the events depicted and composed prior to the prose by apparently one hundred years (1988:1). Thereafter she consistently reads chapter 5 as preceding chapter 4, apparently feeling this diachrony so strongly that at times she writes as though the (usurping) prose section has totally displaced the (original, legitimate) poem.4 At times, too, it leads her, through her favorite strategy of reversing an
