Jerome Murphy-O'Connor has been a mainstay on the faculty of the École Biblique de Jérusalem for more than forty years, where his main focus has been the life and thought of Paul. After a period of illness, he is now back at the top of his game, working at a particular period in Paul's career. The École Biblique has a well-deserved reputation for balancing exposition of the biblical texts, archaeological work that illuminates the worlds of those texts, and the practical consequences of their study. Murphy-O'Connor approaches Paul's Ephesus from a similar breadth of vantage points: Part One presents ancient texts that shed light on Ephesus, while Part Two combines a short archaeological summary of “The Center of Ephesus in 50 C.E.” with a carefully worked out account of “Paul's Ministry in Ephesus.” His introduction notes similarities to—and differences from—his earlier book on Corinth (Murphy-O'Connor, St. Paul's Corinth, Liturgical Press, 2002).
