Tastes of the Divine is the 2015 winner of the AAR's award for Excellence in the Study of Religion in the category of “Constructive-Reflective Studies.” The commendation read at the annual meeting states in part, “ Tastes of the Divine is an elegant work in comparative theology, which expands this area by focusing on the affective elements of traditions, rather than on texts alone. ... The book communicates complex ideas clearly and beautifully, making the work accessible to those who may not be specialists in comparative theology, Hinduism, or Christianity. Its discussion of fury and Dalit performance opens ways for discussions that are highly relevant today, about the appropriate forms of protest among various communities. This creates a valuable counterpoint to the focus on Love alone.” Previous winners of this award include: in 2012, Dream Interpreted within a Dream , by Elliot R. Wolfson; in 2013, Arts of Wonder , by Jeffrey L. Kosky; and in 2014, The Future of Ethics , by Willis Jenkins. Tastes of the Divine is the second book by Voss Roberts, whose earlier Dualities also aimed at engaging contemporary theological topics—gender, embodiment, and the divine-human relationship—by a study that carefully ventures across the border between the Hindu and the Christian. Dualities won the best book in the philosophical-theological category (2008–2011) awarded by the Society for Hindu-Christian Studies.
