The sentiment expressed in these lines is one which is very likely to overtake anyone who gives serious thought to issues raised by subtitle of this paper. To judge from recent literature on subject, justification of place of literary critic in field of religious studies has eluded most everyone who has turned his hand to it. Valiant attempts there have been, of course, and in abundance; one finds everywhere such articles and monographs as Religion and Story, Poetry and Prayer, Myth and Metaphysics, Parable and Theology, Metaphor and Truth, Imagination and Faith, Narrative and Belief, but almost all of these efforts represent no more than eddies of meaning, swerves of action that fail to achieve a satisfactory articulation of Overall. Our current inability to draw the sum of these events might constitute more of an embarrassment were it not for fact that until quite recently such topics
