Between Muslims is a well written and accessible ethnography of “ordinary relationships” in the tradition of anthropologist Veena Das. The book is appropriate for upper-level undergraduates or even graduate students seeking an introduction to Islam or the Middle East. Readers will come to recognize intersections that are part of ordinary life. Though not necessarily addressed to specialists, Between Muslims is, nevertheless, groundbreaking and innovative. It is seminal for two reasons: first, it fills an important gap on Sunni Kurds and is an exception in the literature on Kurds in that it does not focus on nationalism and questions of sovereignty (or the lack thereof). Secondly, it heeds Samuli Schielke’s call for scholars to pay attention to Muslims who are not devout, who are not activists, but who remain deeply enmeshed with other, more pious Muslims, who inhabit “ordinary” relationships with Islam and Muslims.
