For a non-finalist history of punishment: sovereignty, discipline, and control, and the relevance of Discipline and Punish today This article revisits Michel Foucault’s work, particularly Discipline and Punish and related texts, to delimit the way in which the advent of technologies of power appear in the author’s thought based on a simultaneous movement of rupture and rearticulation. Gilles Deleuze’s discussions on societies of control are mobilized similarly. Based on this problematization, we suggest not only that Discipline and Punish and related texts remain current, but also that an affinity between the non-linear and non-finalist perspective of the history of punishment in Foucault and contemporary literature on assemblages can be established
