50 Years of Surveiller et punir: Reception, Critique, and New Perspectives for the Sociology of Violence Vigiar e punir (1975), by Michel Foucault, had a strong impact in Brazil, influencing the Sociology of Violence by introducing new perspectives on power and discipline. The work has received important critiques, such as those by David Garland and Luciano Oliveira, who point to its historical and methodological limitations. In the other hand, authors like Sérgio Adorno and Michel Misse have used Foucault’s concepts to analyze the characteristics of penal control in the country over recent decades. Fifty years later, the book remains relevant as a “toolbox,” but it requires reinterpretation and adaptation to the complexity of penal control in contemporary societies
