Between 1922 and 1931, Dundee elected Britain’s only ever Prohibitionist MP. Despite its success in entering parliament, the Scottish Prohibitionist Party failed to make an impact in any other part of the country. This paper seeks to explain why the party’s success was limited to the city. It examines the nature of the party, and its role within wider political changes affecting Scotland in the interwar period. It will explore the extent to which its political philosophy was particularly well suited to Dundee, and the importance of the party’s organisation and charismatic leader Edwin Scrymgeour to its achievements. Through this, it will shed light on both the nature of Scottish politics in this period, and the extent to which localised political phenomena are the result of environmental factors or the agency of political actors
