This paper presents one possible approach to the study of the mutual adaptation between acute infectious diseases and the human host. The dynamic interaction between the German measles virus and human populations has been used to illustrate the three main phases of this approach. The first phase is a delineation of the existing disease pattern based on clinical and laboratory data. The second part is a consideration of possible evolutionary, biological and behavioral factors leading to the formation of such a pattern, and the third part is a description of significant behavioral responses to the disease
